Stephen Johnson, Karen Bennett and Nick Ellis-Calcott launch FinanceWell

Former Shawbrook heads Stephen Johnson, Karen Bennett and Nick Ellis-Calcott are the partners of new specialist property finance broker FinanceWell.

The broker will support the needs of professional property developers and investors and boasts a team with combined expertise of over £7bn of lending and direct experience of property developing and investing.

Stephen left Shawbrook Bank in 2018, where he held the roles of deputy CEO, executive director of the Shawbrook Group and managing director of property finance.

He played a significant part in the bank’s success over the 15-year period he served there.

In September last year, it was announced that Karen Bennett was to step down from her role as managing director of commercial mortgages at Shawbrook Bank to pursue other opportunities.

She had worked at the bank for over seven years and held a number of senior management positions.

Karen said: “We are delighted to be back working in a market surrounded by many professional businesses and familiar faces.

“This is an exciting new chapter and we look forward to developing new skills while building on our previous track record."

Nick has worked in banking and financial services for over 16 years and was previously the director of business transformation at Arbuthnot Latham.

Prior to that, Nick was one of the founding executives and chief technology officer at Shawbrook Bank.

Andy Thurston — former senior credit manager at Octopus Property — who has worked in financial services for 10 years, is the new company’s relationship manager.

According to its website, FinanceWell passionately believes in building a long-term relationship with its clients.

Its services include supporting with buying a site, funding the build loan for a new project, funding a property conversion or refurbishment, releasing equity from an existing project and buying or refinancing property to hold as an investment.
