Scottish law firm appoints its first trainee as chairman

Law firm Turcan Connell has appointed its current head of tax and succession Alexander Garden (pictured above, right) as its new chairman.

He will take over the role from current chairman Simon Mackintosh — who will remain with the firm as a consultant — on 1st July and lead the firm alongside recently appointed managing partner Gillian Crandles (left).

Alexander is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and chairs its Scottish Taxes Technical Committee.

He joined the firm as its first trainee just weeks after it launched in 1997.

Turcan Connell is a Scottish law firm which provides specialist land and property advice for transactions and complex development deals.

Alexander said: “I’m delighted and honoured to have been appointed chairman and I very much look forward to working alongside Gillian and our fellow partners and colleagues as we steer a course of continued growth over the years ahead.

“In taking over from Simon I have distinguished shoes to fill, but having been with the firm since its inception almost 22 years ago, I am excited about the opportunities looking forward.

“We have a very clear Turcan Connell culture with our clients and the delivery of excellent service to them [is] at the centre of everything that we do.

“In chairing the partnership my aim is to hold [on] to our key values and guide the firm in an empathetic and progressive manner.”

Simon added: “Turcan Connell prides itself on consistently developing and retaining talented individuals.

“As a firm, we have a clear focus on providing succession planning advice to clients and it is very pleasing to be practising what we preach.

“Around half [of] our current partners began their journey as trainees of the firm and I warmly welcome as my successor the person who was our very first trainee over 20 years ago.”
