The latest figures from Hodge have revealed that cities make up 10% of its holiday let mortgage applications.

“Applications for holiday let mortgages have risen across the board in the past year and it appears that people have an appetite for all types of properties — it’s not just places with big open spaces or a view of the sea, city escapes are also making the cut,” said Emma Graham, business development director at Hodge.

According to the bank’s research, York, Norwich, Edinburgh, Hereford and Glasgow are the top five cities to buy a holiday home in the UK.

The data found that 59% of mortgage applications were for coastal homes, with almost one-third (31%) for country bolt holes.

It noted that the average price for a holiday home in April was £423,537.

“Hodge is one of only a few lenders in the market that will lend to mortgage customers looking to use letting sites such as Airbnb,” Emma claimed.

“These sites are popular for those looking to book a city break and will help to boost rental yields for city holiday let homeowners.”
