Scottish homeowners struggling to move home

One in five Scottish homeowners (20%) wants to move in the next five years, but are faced with a lack of suitable properties, a new study has revealed.

Research by the Bank of Scotland – undertaken in conjunction with YouGov – found that 21% of homeowners believed that the inability to find the right property within budget was the key obstacle to buying their next home.

The report also revealed that increasing house prices (19%), the cost of moving (19%) and stamp duty costs (16%) were all issues cited by homeowners that prevented them from moving.

Almost two-thirds of Scottish homeowners (63%) reported that they felt that moving house had become more difficult over the past 10 years.

Graham Blair, mortgages director at Bank of Scotland, said: “There are a number of factors that seem to be making Scottish homeowners want to stay put, from the cost of moving to a lack of the ‘right type’ of homes coming on to the market and we have seen more homeowners putting off the move and looking to add value to their homes instead.

"While this isn’t great news for the housing market, where sales have remained flat or fallen over the past few months, encouragingly some homeowners are still motivated and want to move and with little concern over recent base rate rises we may start to see more movement early next year.”
