Rents plummet to lowest in eight months

The number of letting agents witnessing rent increases fell in November to 32%, according to the latest research.

ARLA Propertymark’s private rented sector (PRS) report has revealed that this represented an 18-percentage-point decline compared with the previous month’s statistics (50%).

This is the lowest figure registered since March, when it stood at 30%.

Demand from prospective tenants also fell, with an average of 67 prospective tenants per branch, compared with 72 in the previous month.

David Cox, chief executive at ARLA Propertymark, said: “The ongoing uncertainties of Brexit and [last week’s] general election have caused people to hold off on their property search until some political clarity is reached, which has led to this fall in demand.

“Now that the election has brought some political stability, tenants will likely be looking for properties again and the new government must recognise the importance of making the market attractive for both tenants and landlords.”
