An ex-footballer who has turned financial planner will now give advice to the Professional Footballer’s Association.

Paul Mullin holds the record number of appearances – more than 450 – and scored almost 200 goals for popular cult football club Accrington Stanley.

Now he is a chartered financial planner with Bolton-based Pro Sport Wealth Management. A company that provides advice to professional footballers and other sports men and women.

Earlier this month, Pro Sport, set up by former Rochdale Football Club captain Gareth Griffiths, inked a deal with the PFA to provide financial advice to 36 clubs spanning the Championship - English football's second tier - to League Two.

"All sports people have the same issue - a finite period in which you can maximise your earnings, but once your body says you have to retire you have to find something to fill the financial gap," said Mullin.

"Because myself and Gareth have been in that situation it puts us in a good position to advise others how to prepare for it."

As part of the deal, the company will visit the clubs twice a year and offer financial advice and guidance.

In May this year Mullin joined Pro Sport Wealth – the specialist sporting arm of Manchester-based Independent Financial Advisor Limited. He is thought to be the only professional footballer to hold chartered status.
