The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England recently conducted a survey revealing some concerning statistics. The research found that 83% of finance professionals were thinking of changing jobs due to the impact that the work had upon their mental health, almost half committed and made the change.
The research, which surveyed 1,000 people working within financial services, found that employees felt they are in need of more support, with 60% saying their employer could do more to support workplace wellbeing and mental health.
The nature of the industry itself exacerbates these stresses. People who work in Bridging often work irregular hours, juggling multiple projects simultaneously. This constant juggling act between work and personal life can lead to mental health issues. The stigma surrounding mental health issues further compounds the problem. In a high-pressure environment where perception is paramount, admitting vulnerability can be perceived as weakness. This culture of silence discourages individuals from seeking the support they desperately need.
Despite these challenges, the tide is slowly turning. Organisations within the bridging industry are beginning to recognise the importance of prioritising mental health.

StreamBank have implemented voluntary health screening that provide temperature checks and support services. We have also designed our policies that promote work-life balance, flexible working arrangements, and regular mental health check-ins. These initiatives aim to destigmatise mental health conversations and provide employees with the resources they need to thrive and significantly improve well-being.
Moreover, raising awareness about mental health is gaining traction within the industry. Events, workshops, and seminars focusing on well-being and stress management are becoming more commonplace. By fostering open dialogue and providing education, these initiatives strive to create a more supportive and understanding workplace environment.
Collaboration between industry stakeholders, government bodies, and mental health organisations is crucial. By working together, we can develop comprehensive strategies to address mental health challenges in the specialist finance sector.
For me, the implications of neglecting mental health cannot be overstated. While mental health issues persist, there's a growing recognition of the need for change. By fostering a culture of support, implementing proactive measures, and prioritising well-being, we can create a healthier and more resilient workforce, as we navigate the complexities of the bridging industry.
