Judge implicated in £1.5m property fraud

After being accused of being involved in a £1.5 million fraud, Judge Ian Christmas reportedly told the Royal Court earlier this week that he had acted in ‘good faith’.

The magistrate-designate first appeared in court in May with co-defendants John Lewis, Russell Foot and James Cameron, who were all accused of perpetrating a £1.5 million property fraud.

This week however, Ian Christmas told investigators that he had not defrauded anyone and had never intended to do so. He added that he was sorry that anyone lost money as a result of his business venture,

Mr Christmas set up property company De Lec Ltd, with partners John Lewis and Eric Evans. It is this company which is alleged to be involved in misleading ‘financially unsophisticated’ investors regarding property investments in Colorado and Florida over a four year period between 2004 and 2008.

According to the Jersey publication, Mr Christmas said in an interview two years ago that because of his small degree of business experience, his role as a director of the company De Lec was always going to be limited. He is also reported to have said that he lost £65,000 through investing in his company, and laid the blame for the collapse of his property venture on the property crisis in America.
