Top City banker charged with killing wife

.

A senior HSBC executive, Neil Ellerbeck, has been charged with murdering his wife at their home in Enfield, north London.

Katherine Ellerbeck was found dead on Friday night, with a post mortem examination revealing the cause of death as “asphyxiation and manual compression of the neck.” Mr Ellerbeck was arrested shortly after paramedics arrived at their luxury detached property.

Mr Ellerbeck worked in Canary Wharf for HSBC Asset Management as global chief investment officer in the liquidity division, which controls investments of roughly £267 billion.

A Met spokesman stated that “a man was arrested at the scene. He was taken to an east London police station and was charged with murder.”

The couple’s two children, a 13 year old boy and a 10 year old girl, were not thought to have been in the house at the time and are now being cared for by a sister of Mrs Ellerbeck living nearby.

An HSBC spokesman denied reports that Mr Ellerbeck had recently lost his job: “we can confirm that he was employed by us but we cannot say anything further at present because of the police investigation. Our thoughts are with his family.”

A biography of Mr Ellerbeck by HSBC talks of his “distinguished track record.” Having entered the financial industry when he was only 18 years old, he had built a reputation for managing portfolios, asset-gathering and product development and had worked for Chase Manhattan Bank, Lombard Odier, JP Morgan and Barclays.

Neighbours describe the banker as “very quiet and shy” who “left home very early and came home quite late.” The murder of Mrs Ellerbeck has taken the tranquil cul-de-sac by surprise, as the couple, who had been married for 14 years, seemed happy: “we never heard them fighting or anything,” said one neighbour.
