The Chief Land Registrar and CEO of the Land Registry announced he'll "step down from both roles in the first half of next year".

He joined the agency in 2013 on a ticket to restructure and privatise the Registry, if not entirely then at least in great proportion.

The Land Registry's plans for privatisation were exposed in the press earlier this year and subsequently abandoned.

Prior to the Land Registry job, Ed Lester had been leading the Student Loans Company as CEO at a time of structural change, when university fees had trebled and there were plans to sell the student debt on the open market. These plans ultimately fell through as well and Ed Lester had been questioned by Parliament for receiving his public purse-funded pay through a service company - thus potentially avoiding full UK income tax.

Mark Boyle, Chair of Land Registry said: “The Board and I are sad that Ed has decided to leave Land Registry, but fully support his decision."

"Land Registry will now start the process of recruiting for the new Chief Land Registrar and Chief Executive so that the individual can be in place before Ed’s departure," the communique says.

There were no details available at the time of writing of how the recruitment process will be carried out.
