p>After three years in hiding, an individual has been jailed for her part in a major mortgage fraud.

Agne Khan, 30, Birmingham, hid from the law after her role in a network which defrauded high street banks out of almost £8 million in 2008.

Sergeant Simon Russen, Detective at City of London Police, who led the long-running investigation, said that after five years on the run, Agne Khan may have thought the police had long forgotten about her.

“Unfortunately for her, we never close the file on a case until we are certain we have done all we can to ensure justice has been served in full,” he said.

The gang she was a part of used  solicitors to submit 33 fake mortgage applications on properties that they did not own, and had no intention to purchase, across the South East of the UK.

The applications were approved and lenders transferred the funds into a single bank account. This was then redistributed by the gang into 68 separate accounts they had opened under false names.

The City of London Police were contacted by one of the banks in March 2009. A few months later, five of the gang were arrested, and then later jailed.

On escaping detection, Mrs Khan fled the country and a European Arrest Warrant was placed in her name. She was arrested after trying to re-enter the UK in September 2014.

A few months later, she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and conspiracy to possess articles for use in fraud, as well as conspiracy to possess false identity documents.

Detective Russen added: “She is now the sixth and final member of this gang who has been put behind bars as a result of what was a highly complex investigation into a type of scam that was particularly prevalent in the first decade of the 21st century.”

Gold bars, £100,000, jewellery and set of motor vehicles were recovered from the gang during the course of the investigation.
