< Can you believe we have already reached March!
The winter blues are almost over and it’s beginning to get lighter going to and from work which means plenty more active ‘you’ time.
If you are stumped on what to do in your spare time during March, here are a few ideas from The Weekender:
Holidays
Two significant holidays in March both very different but both ones which should be observed and remembered.
Sunday 15th March is Mother’s Day so make sure you get down to the local flower shop early and get the chocolates prepared and make sure you give your Mum all the love and attention she deserves, otherwise you won’t hear the end of it!
However, after the tranquil Sunday, Tuesday will be a day of much celebration especially if you have links to the Emerald Isles.
Of course St Patricks Day is an event which has grown significantly in the UK over the past few years after previously being more associated with Ireland and New York.
There will be plenty of pubs cashing in with cheap Guinness offers on that Tuesday night so a perfect way to end a business day at work.
Don’t get carried away though no one ever wants a hangover during the middle of the week!
Sport
You cannot move for sport in March with some huge fixtures across all sports.
For the early risers amongst you why not spend the few hours before work watching the latter stages of the Cricket World Cup.
Bar being jealous of the warm weather Down Under there are plenty of huge games as the tournament reaches its climax, you never know it may even be England’s year on the 29th March…. Yeah, I doubt it too.
However, the Six Nations rugby championship could see English triumph after a great start to the campaign with wins over Italy and Wales but defeat to Ireland has left the Championship wide open.
With Ireland having to travel to the Millennium Stadium next weekend a win could practically seal the title but defeat will leave the door back open for England and Wales.
There will be plenty of winner-takes-all clashes in football in March as Manchester United face Arsenal in the FA Cup Quarter Final on Monday night before taking on Tottenham and Liverpool in the Premier League later in the month as they battle for the valuable 4th Champions League spot.
Films
If sport isn’t your thing then perhaps a night at the cinema might take your fancy and there is no shortage of must see films coming out in March.
The month starts with the release of Just Alice which saw leading Actress, Julianne Moore claim an Academy Award for her portrayal of a highly respected Columbia University linguistics expert who starts begins to suffer the early-onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
For those who want to reminisce about childhood why not catch Cinderella as Disney release a live action version of the cartoon classic starring Lily James, Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter.
If you prefer a more action packed film look out for Wild Card which sees Hollywood hardman Jason Statham go after a sadistic thug who beat his friend, only to find that the object of his wrath is the son of a powerful mob boss. A must see for anyone who loves car chases, gun fights and explosions.
Finally, if you want to remain popular with your kids then make sure you get them to what is sure to be the kids film of the year, The Spongebob Movie, if you can manage to weather a few hours of the protaginist’s shrill voice that is.
Events
First of all why not check out the Women of the World festival at the Southbank Centre tomorrow which will celebrate all that is great with woman with talks, debates, concerts, films and comedy.
The more artistic amongst you might be interested by the Noel Fielding exhibition at the Royal Albert Hall which runs from today to 15th March or the Inventing Impressionism touring show organised by the Philadelphia Museum of Art which is being held at the National Gallery until the end of May.
Finally for the fashion conscious, the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition opens at the V&A on March 14th but you better book now as it is set to be the hottest ticket in town.
So there you have it, now you know there is no shortage of entertainment in March to get stuck-in to.
