Lender CEO resigns

A major bank has announced the resignation of its chief executive officer.

Piraeus Bank has announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer Anthimos Thomopoulos.

The resignation comes after the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund, tasked with bringing stability to the Greek banking system, denied putting pressure on him to quit.

The bank said in a statement: “Mr. Anthimos Thomopoulos resigned this afternoon from his duties as Chief Executive Officer of the Bank.”

“Mr. Thomopoulos has made himself available to the Board of Directors for as long as required in order to ensure a smooth succession and handover of his duties.”

In 1999, Piraeus opened a City of London branch which focuses on lending facilities for property investments in the UK and personal banking services for high-net-worth individuals.

The bank appointed Stavros Lekkakos as Interim CEO on Wednesday.
