Charles Haresnape, Group Managing Director of Mortgages at Aldermore, has called on the government to improve housing supply, following research by RICS.
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors found the number of homes up for sale hit a record low in July as demand from potential buyers continued to increase.
More worrying still, for Simon Rubinsohn, RICS’s Chief Economist, is the suspicion that the imbalance between supply and demand will lead to even stronger price gains over the next year.
Charles said the lack of housing supply was the biggest issue facing the housing market today and the RICS findings had underlined this.
“The fact that 9 out of 12 regions in the UK experienced a decline in new vendor instructions highlights the need for the government to address these supply side issues, in order to put the brakes on house price rises,” said Charles.
Charles added: “There needs to be a cohesive long term strategy to ensure the sustainability of the UK's housing market."
